Extremophile — self driving trains
The future is arriving, and one of the names leading the revolution is Elon Musk.
He has been the force behind some of the most revolutionary inventions of this generation, and he has been architecting lot of inventions.
One of the inventions the world is eying on self driving vehicles.
The reason is clear as day — it is one of the inventions that is going to help the common man.
The mars mission may be revolutionary some day, but not today, but that is not the case with self driving vehicles.
They can help you even in this age and era.
Self Driving Vehicles
One of the chief inventions people are working on today is self driving trains/metro.
Counties like India and Japan rely heavily on trains, as trains can carry much more passengers in limited time.
Also, self driving trains are much more stable as their algorithms are much more sorted out.
Unlike self driving cars, they do not make heavy use of sensors and the rate of mistakes is dramatically low.
How can one achieve so?
Self driving vehicles are based on artificial intelligence.
Unfortunately, artificial intelligence is a technology that we are yet to design perfectly. The current artificial intelligence is neither reliable nor as self dependent as we want.
Though, the self driving trains will mostly make use of machine learning.
Machine learning is the technique when a vehicle develops algorithm based on constant practices, and based on the data they perform future activities.
There is one more boon — once the algorithm has been developed by one machine, the data can be transferred to other machines.
So all we need to do is to train one machine, and other machines have to imitate the algorithm.
Algorithm
If we look at the algorithm, it could be tricky but so every revolutionary tech is so.
The algorithm has to understand the constant of “How long”, or in simpler terms, the concept of duration.
What does it mean?
Simply put, the trains or the machines has to act based on the given time interval.
It has to act and operate based on the data of time interval, and act accordingly.
In order to make it convenient according to the people, there used to have sensors monitoring the intensity, or number of people at the station and in the train.
The sensors would help the trains to avoid any possible accidents due to overcrowded people.
But here it doesn’t end.
The algorithm has to take in account the festivals, office hours, change in weather and possibility of blackout.
The intensity of people changes according to events.
Errors
If machines are involved, errors are bound to happen.
The algorithm has to be highly secure, and has to take in account the possibility of delays.
In case the delays happen due to any circumstance, it has to take action to make for the time without causing inconvenience to the people boarding it.
One of the chief errors could be human interference on the train, and it has to act and react according to every possible situation.
It will learn eventually, but until it does, it has to be under constant surveillance.
